Anglicare SA and chaplaincy

Chaplaincy at Anglicare focuses on pastoral care and spirituality, as well as the development of links between Anglicare sites and programs and local Anglican (and other) parishes and schools.

Pastoral Care is available to paid staff and volunteers through the role of Peter Burke (pictured, right) the Coordinator of Chaplaincy and Parish Community Work. This includes support for individuals and teams as they face the daily challenges of supporting others.

Pastoral Care is available to the residents and staff of our aged care sites through locally based Chaplains, including Marian Giles at All Hallows Westbourne Park, Neil Mathieson at Canterbury Close and Dutton Court, and Graeme Caskey at St Laurence’s Grange. These chaplains are supported by volunteers who also provide pastoral care.

Spirituality includes the regular conduct of liturgical services on a regular (at least weekly) basis at the abovementioned aged care sites, as well as at Ian George Court, Brompton and the Chapel of St Barnabas, North Adelaide (pictured, right). The Annual Service for Anglicare is held near the date of the establishment of the Orphan Home in early July 1860.

A monthly prayer calendar has also been developed as a way of encouraging staff, volunteers and supporters to uphold the daily work of Anglicare through prayer (See link below for this publication). Opportunities for reflection on the wider meanings of the work of Anglicare are also arranged from time to time.  There is also a focus on Parish Development in Anglicare Chaplaincy, with the aim of developing mutually beneficial links between parishes, schools and the work of Anglicare sites and programs. There are already direct parish links with a number of Anglicare services, such as the Elizabeth Mission (Family Centre North) and Holy Cross, Elizabeth; The Old Rectory and St John’s, Salisbury; The Magdalene Centre and St Mary Magdalene’s Moore Street, St John’s Halifax Street and the Cathedral Church of St Peter; and Family Centre South and St Hillary’s Morphett Vale.

Beyond this is a much wider network of connection between Anglicare, parishes and schools. Further links in the delivery of services and the pastoral care of paid staff and volunteers are being explored through the work of the Coordinator of Chaplaincy and Parish Community Work.

Anglicare Singers

The Anglicare Singers is a group of staff, supporters and volunteers of Anglicare SA, who get together for a shared note every week. They train Monday afternoons at 4.30pm (by arrangement) and appear at various functions and events. They have a big commitment to performing for our aged care residents, and at Anglicare SA aged care sites.

They sing contemporary and traditional songs, hymns, carols, spirituals — and whatever music they can make sound good. They are led by the Rev'd Joan Claring-Bould and Peter Burke. Contact Peter on (08) 8305 9295 if you'd like to be part of this fun group.

The Anglicare Singers were featured live on the evening program on Fiveaa with Aly Rodda on 19 December: click to see the full story.
