Hope was definitely here this Christmas.
Due to the generosity of the Adelaide people Anglicare were able to assist over 1500 individuals and families over the Christmas period.
In Anglicareās southern office alone everyone registered for a hamper and everyone on the waiting list were provided with food and toys for Christmas Day.
Anglicare services in the north, south and in the city all reported a significant increase in demand for Christmas hampers, financial and emergency assistance this Christmas. Demand increased by approximately 25% leaving Anglicareās services strained.
Anglicare Chief Executive Dr Lynn Arnold said, “we believe this increase in demand has stemmed from a variety of issues faced by the community in 2009 including the global financial crisis, rising interest rates and the increasing cost of living.
“Unfortunately, the demand for services doesnāt stop after Christmas and many individuals and families experience even more financial hardship after Christmas when bills come in.
“Not only do people suffer from financial trouble but there are other fallouts after Christmas including family breakdown and drug and alcohol overuse.
“The people of Adelaide are very generous and at Anglicare we hope that this generosity continues in the New Year,” Dr Arnold said. For as little as $1 a day, you can help Anglicare provide its many programs and services by becoming a 'Hope Partner'. Phone 1300 HOPE SA or click here to donate
Some stories have been inspiring:
- Anglicareās Youth 180 program received gifts for each of the 11 children in the program from a local church. Furthermore, the church donated money to the program so the young people and their youth carer could have a Christmas lunch/dinner.
- In Anglicareās southern office a client returned their Christmas hamper saying there were other people more deserving. The client then stayed and volunteered their time to assist with hamper distribution.
