Family Relationship Education and Skills development

Our Family Relationship Education and Skills Development programs provide a range of education and skills training opportunities.

Relationships are the most important things in our lives. Learning to do them better is a worthwhile investment of your time!

Our relationship education helps you create stable, positive relationships with partners, community, colleagues, family. We also promote positive parenting and non punitive problem solving, parenting and family functioning skills. 

We provide a broad range of groups for community, and we are happy to take suggestions from the community on topics for our group programs. We have run many successful groups on

  • parenting

  • preparing for retirement

  • looking at communication in relationships

  • unscrambling twisted thinking

  • how to say no and mean it

  • coping with separation and divorce

  • kids and feelings

  • parenting in the 21st century

  • communicating with your child, and

  • the joys of parenthood

…just to name a few!

Group Facilitation Skills 2009 (click for more info)

The workshop will be offered over 3 days and provide staff and volunteers with skills to be able to facilitate a group.  This workshop will contain education on setting course objectives, creating a session plan, learning how to cater for different learning styles in adults and how to deal with conflict and difficult participants and group dynamics.  Please fee free to call me for further information.

Looking For Love - Aberfoyle Community Centre (click for more info)

Held at Aberfoyle Community Centre, cost $20 per session. These sessions are for women only and focus on looking at the past and what may be holding participants back from forming new relationships.  It provides the opportunity to share with others in a safe environment who may be in a similar situation and to learn some new skills around healthy relationships, communication and assertion and what to look for in a partner and how to meet new people.

Joys of Parenthood at Pathways Family Centre Hackham 2009 (click here for more information)

This course is for parents of 0 - 5 year old children and includes general parenting tips on behaviour relative to age,  It also includes building emotional resilience and discipline strategies.  Please call Pathways on 8186 6944 to register for this course.  Free crèche provided.

Future Directions Term 1 2009

Adam and Eve - Healthy Relationships. 

5 weekly sessions, Thursday nights 7-9pm, 12 March to 9 April

This is our healthy relationship course for singles or couples to gain skills and education on what makes up a healthy relationship. This course is for anyone wanting to know more about how healthy relationships work and who may be experiencing difficulties in conflict or communication within their relationship or who would like to know how to have a healthy relationship. Please feel free to contact me for more information.    

12 March to 9th April 2009 Cost $10 each session per person or $40 earlybird if paid before commencement.  This course is for couples or singles who are interested in developing a healthy relationship.  The course looks at:
  • What is a healthy relationship?
  • What isn't so healthy?
  • The Seven Principles of Successful Relationships - with some materila from John Gottman's book, Communication and Assertion
  • How to raise an issue with respect
  • Acknowledging differences in partners
  • What to look for in a partner
  • Conflict in relationships and how to work through a conflict
  • What to do when things go wrong
  • How to build love in your relationship
  • Emotional intelligence in relationships
  • Love languages - what is your love language?

Professional Development Workshops - 1 day

These are  two workshops we offer for staff and volunteers who sometimes deal with difficult clients and who could use some strategies in communicating effectively, how to work with angry clients and also how to deal with the subjects of suicide and self harm.  Please see the flyers attached for more information.  I can also be contacted on the number listed for further details.

Tuesday 12 May 2009 9.30am – 4.30pm 197 South Rd, Morphett Vale

 Cost $60 or 3 staff/volunteers for $120. with lunch provided.   If your staff are placed in the role of counsellor inappropriately by clients that access your service then this workshop is for you.  The day includes information and education on how to deal with difficult and angry clients, focusing on building communication skills and how to work with a client using a step by step process that aims to support and lead to appropriate referrals.  Extensive handouts provided. 

Suicide and Self Harm Brief Interventions workshop 2009 (click for more information)

Professional development training opportunity for staff and volunteers who work with clients who may be at risk of suicide or self harm.  This workshop provides an excellent resource kit of handouts and referral agencies for future use and a risk assessment tool to use in the workplace.  It also provides comprehensive skills education into how to deal with a crisis situation using a brief interventions model, to assist workers to have confidence to respond in stressful situations such as working with clients who have suicidal or self harming tendencies.

Here are details of our positive thinking course for next term. This course is excellent for building confidence and in raising people's morale when they may be feeling isolated and are dealing with negative relationships, and need to develop some positive attitudes towards their lives. 

This is a five week course dealing with effective communication strategies and assertive statements.  Learn how to build your confidence by creating safe and healthy boundaries in your communication and relationships.  Learn how to direct the conversation and how to ask for what you need with an attitude of respect and confidence and to leave the situation feeling empowered rather than uncomfortable.  We provide extensive handouts and the opportunities to practice the skills in assertion and effective communication. 

5 week course

Thursday 5 March to 2 April 2009 12.30 - 2.30pm

Our Skills Education program has worked with services, community and volunteers to develop skills in how to work with difficult clients, working as the first point of contact for administrative staff and volunteers, team building and development days, suicide and self harming awareness training for youth workers and mentors, with many more planned yet to happen!
