KidsAreFirst program for parents
who are separated and experiencing conflict
Anglicare’s Family Support Team has been working with
families for 30 years. The team supports parents where
they are having difficulties, or where children are at
risk of being harmed or neglected.
The service is home-based, focuses on a family’s
strengths. The team works with parents to help them
understand issues like child development, budgeting,
behaviour management and household organisation.
Over 30 years, the team has developed a great deal of
skill working in partnership with families.
A specialist men’s support worker works with
fathers and families with adolescent boys.
The Family Support Team runs events and workshops,
discussion and education groups, on things like 'free to
be creative' and men’s issues.

For some families, the fighting doesn’t stop after the
divorce or separation. When children move between
parents for contact, visits can become a traumatic time
for all. Anglicare’s Children’s Contact service provides
a safe, neutral and caring environment for both
children’s changeovers and supervised visits with their
non-residential parent. The service is completely
independent of the Family Court and its proceedings. It
is open every weekend at Noarlunga on Friday
afternoon/evening, Saturday and Sunday afternoon/evening
and every second weekend at
Mt Barker on Saturday and
Sunday afternoon. Before you can use the service, both
parties need to make an application and attend an
interview.

In the Barossa
and Light areas, Anglicare has been commissioned to run
a domestic violence intervention service.
This service
offers information, support and counselling to women who
experience family or domestic violence. The service also
helps children who are affected by violence and men who are concerned
about their own aggressive and abusive behaviour towards
their family.
The service
offers one-on-one counselling or group work. The service does
not have accommodation for emergencies or crisis
situations, but it can help people find temporary or
longer term accommodation.
For more
information, contact the service on (08) 8562 4597, or
fax (08) 8562 4549.
KidsAreFirst is for divorced
or separated parents who are experiencing difficulty
communicating with each other on parenting issues and/or
who have experienced a breakdown in parenting orders.
The program offers socio-educational groups, along with
counselling if required, to help parents build
communication and co-operation in shared parenting.
KidsAreFirst also offers
group programs for children aged 4–18 years, extended
families and new partners of participating parents.
Highly trained and professional
staff provide individual follow up and review of the
program, and access to other services as required.
The service is metropolitan and
statewide, low cost, and does not require a referral.
A
recent participant said "I've learnt so much about
myself through this course already. I have a real sense
of self worth now, which I never had before. I know
there is always another way to look at a situation, to
turn it around to make it better."
"What I really want now is to have
peace and harmony with my ex-wife. I want everything to
be as stress-free as possible. When my kids say they
want to be a ballerina, or a fireman, I want to be able
to sit down with my ex-wife and for us to decide we can
help our kids achieve their dreams."
